Biography: I have always been a fighter. Born into a country where the minority religious community I belonged to was constantly attacked, my parents fled Pakistan. Arriving in the United States as refugees, they dreamed of a better life to come; however, they were faced with a slew of new tribulations. Without an understanding of English, a college education, or knowledge of the culture, my family struggled to survive. In turn, I focused on the only safe haven I had – school. I realized education was the only way to help my family, so with the support of loving people and my own personal determination, I fought for the impossible.
As a Gates Millennium scholar, I now study neuroscience and behavioral psychology at Stanford and plan to tackle the social issues our world faces.
