Biography: My name is Karolina Bassa and I am studying Mathematics and Philosophy at the University of Oxford. My passion in both subjects can be seen in my academic achievements: title of Honourable Mentioned in XXIV International Philosophy Olympiad, 1st and 7th places in National Philosophy Olympiads and the finalist title National Mathematics Olympiad. I have received awards from the Prime Minister and Ministry of Education.
I engage in charities fighting for better access to education, as I believe that only it and hard work can enable people to realise their potential. I was a scout leader in Polish Scout Association, leading and inspiring people from diverse social backgrounds. I am a part of coordination team for Poland of Project Access, a charity helping underprivileged students to get to the best world universities by providing prospective students with mentors, organizing workshops, educational camps and supporting students throughout their application. This spring I worked in a start-up promoting STEM subjects, as one of my aims to eradicate the gender bias in this field.
Working on vineyards in France and in a summer school in rural China, as well as my travels during which I lived with and learned from different communities showed me that potential and wisdom are everywhere. It is our responsibility to reduce inequalities and provide developing societies with opportunities, but also to learn from them.
My plans for the future include PhD in mathematics and working in start-ups developing technology to solve social issues and lessening economic and social inequalities. I would like to especially concentrate on education and developing access to it in the poorest areas on the globe.
