Deborah Berebichez is a Physicist, Data Scientist & TV host. She is the first Mexican woman to graduate with a physics Ph.D. from Stanford University. Dr. Berebichez is the co-host of Discovery Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science TV show (2012 – 2014). She also co-stars on the TV show Humanly Impossible (2011) produced by National Geographic channel. For her doctoral dissertation, Dr. Berebichez carried out research in the area of acoustic wave propagation and time-reversal of waves. She invented a highly effective technique in the field of wireless communications whereby a cell phone user can communicate with a desired target user in a location far away. Her work designing novel wireless communications systems has potential advantages over current approaches.  

Currently a Principal Data Scientist at Thoughtworks. Previous work performing statistical analysis on financial data to develop new and improve on current quantitative investment strategies. Programmer with experience in object-oriented languages such as Matlab and C++.  

Dr. Berebichez’ work in STEM outreach has been recognized by WSJ, Oprah, Dr. Oz, CNN, TED, DLD, WIRED, Ciudad de las Ideas and others. Her passion is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science. She is the Global Ambassador for Technovation Challenge to teach high school girls from under-served communities how to code science-based mobile apps and start high-tech companies based on them. Dr. Berebichez has taken her STEM outreach initiatives globally to places like India, Israel, Mexico and Costa Rica.

Due to the international nature of her work, she has recently been named a John C. Whitehead Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. Dr. Berebichez is last year's recipient of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)'s Community Service STAR Award. She is also the 2013 award recipient for Top Latina Tech Blogger by the Association of Latinos in Social Media LATISM.
